ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

About Us

MilwaukeeCares is a cooperative program between the Medical Society of Milwaukee County and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The program is a voluntary public-private partnership initiative that was established to provide health care to low income, uninsured patients in Milwaukee County who don’t qualify for Medicaid or GAMP. The primary goal of MilwaukeeCares is to develop and manage a coordinated system that helps uninsured people access healthcare services. MilwaukeeCares provides appropriate access to free primary and specialty care, hospital services and medication for uninsured people who cannot afford needed services.

MilwaukeeCares recognizes that many area physicians already donate care to some of their patients. Participating physicians may refer patients they believe meet eligibility requirements to the MilwaukeeCares office. If the patient is found eligible, they will be enrolled into the program and credit will be given toward the number of pledges that physician has made.

Organizational Model

Access to quality health care is critical to maintaining a healthy population, and the need for a program like MilwaukeeCares in Milwaukee County is undeniable. Milwaukee County residents continue to experience significant barriers in accessing adequate health care. Moreover, there are proven disparities in the health status of Milwaukee residents when compared to the State of Wisconsin and the United States. MilwaukeeCaresis modeled after Project Access (www.projectaccess.net), a proven, successful community service program that has been implemented in more than 20 communities throughout the United States.

MilwaukeeCares is also working with Health Care Network in Racine, Wisconsin and the Medical Society of Sedgwick County Project Access in Wichita, Kansas to continue to develop its infrastructure.
